The location of a central inspection tower in the penitentiary makes the prisoner believe that he is under the constant and watchful eyes of an invisible observer. Michel Foucault in his Discipline and Punish describes the emergence of the “docile body,” which is the result of the permanent and relentless gaze of a prison surveillance system called the panopticon. Spectatorship, both of avatars themselves and pictures of them in profiles, plays a significant role in the construction and appreciation of the (female) body.
